FGCU women’s tennis earns titles at Bedford Cup

The FGCU women’s tennis team finished play at the annual Bedford Cup. This three-day event hosted the best teams in the state of Florida. The men’s tennis team will head to Tallahassee next weekend to take part in the Bedford Cup hosted by FSU. The Eagles finished the weekend with three titles, earning two doubles wins and one singles win. Sofia Perez won the No. 6 main draw title for the only singles win of the weekend for FGCU. Volleyball goes 2-1 at Wildcat Classic with wins over Wofford and Davidson

The FGCU volleyball team finished 2-1 at the Wildcat Classic after defeating Wofford and Davidson, but fell to Georgia in three sets.  Against Wofford, the Eagles swept the Terriers in three sets, with a dominant performance from Amanda Carrol, who became the third player – second in DI history – to reach 1,000 career kills.   In the match against Davidson, the Eagles were down 2-1 but had a dominant comeback with a fourth set win, pushing the game to a fifth set.    In the match against Georgia, FGCU went down quickly but battled back in the third set, only to fall to the Bulldogs as they secured a three-set victory.   Freshman outside hitter Cortney VanLiew and sophomore middle blocker Daniele Serrano were both named to the Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team following the tournament.  VanLiew recorded 44 kills and had 27 digs over the three matches, while Serrano added 23 kills and five blocks.  After trailing 2-1 in the opening set against Wofford, FGCU rattled off four straight points to take a 5-2 lead, and from there, they never trailed.   In a decisive third set, the Eagles were forced to take a timeout after the Terriers put up five consecutive points to take a 10-9 lead. Yet, FGCU came out strong with seven-straight points to take a 16-10 lead and an eventual 25-18 match victory.   Carroll finished the match with a game-high 18 kills and 19 digs, followed behind Courtney VanLiew, who recorded 13 kills.   On the second day of play, the Eagles first faced off against Davidson.   Despite having a better hitting percentage in the...

Preview: Women’s soccer at Arizona

The FGCU women’s soccer team will head to Arizona to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils Friday, Sept. 8 at 9:30 p.m. The Eagles will be coming off four home games that included FAU, Kent State and Liberty University. This will be the first time these two teams will meet in program history. Arizona is currently 1-1-1 with its one loss against UCF 1-2 and its one time against UC Irvine. Preview: Men’s cross country at ASUN Preview

The FGCU men’s cross-country team will compete in the ASUN Preview Friday, Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. The team will be coming off competing in the FAU Invitational where they placed second just 10 points behind in-state rival Miami. Three runners finished in the top-10 for the men, led by Troy Clark, who finished third overall with a time of 15:47.08. Other teammates Maximilian Weigand and Joseph Salerno finished fourth and ninth, respectively. On Friday night, the Eagles competed in their first game at the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic and flew by Vermont to earn a dominant 4-0 victory. The FGCU women’s soccer team continued its dominance against Eastern Michigan earning a 5-1 win over EMU Sunday morning. “I was very pleased with the weekend,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “Any time you can get six points on the weekend and on the road, it’s a good thing. Kicking off its 2017 season, the FGCU volleyball team is set to host the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. Play will begin Friday, August 25th against FIU at 7 p.m. and will finish up on Saturday, August 26th against Georgia Southern at 11 a.m. and IUPUI at 7 p.m. Last season, the Eagles hosted this same invitational with Delaware, New Orleans, and VCU. FGCU men’s tennis, Alfonzo, earns spot on Winners for Life team

After excelling both on and off the court, FGCU men’s tennis player, Andres Alfonzo, has recently earned a spot on the ASUN Conference Spring 2017 Winners for Life team. In May, Alfonzo was named FGCU’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and recently graduated from FGCU with a 3.5 GPA and a degree in Finance. His performance in the classroom earned him the co-ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
