Police Beat: Break in, masked men, and vaping

Locked and Loaded UPD was called out to South Village on Dec. 31 at 10:31 p.m. due to a social media post showing a student had a gun in their room. When UPD confronted the student, she stated that it was, in fact, a real loaded firearm, and it belonged to her friend that came over earlier in the evening. The owner is a correction officer with the Florida Department of Corrections, so the student didn’t know he wasn’t allowed to have the gun on campus. Bicycle Pump Predicaments On Thursday, Dec. 22 at 5:21 p.m., a complainant called UPD requesting assistance with the bicycle pump in front of McTarnaghan Hall. The complainant was unsure whether the pump was broken or if he was simply not using it correctly. A UPD officer arrived on scene to find that the air pump was missing part of its valve. Broken Vending Machine in Cohen Center On Saturday, Dec. 10 at 8:44 a.m., an FGCU bookstore employee called to report an electrical smell coming from a nearby vending machine. UPD officers responded to the call and found the vending machine had overheated. The FGCU Physical Plant was contacted to assist officers in safely unplugging the machine.
