FGCU grabs a pair of ASUN wins after straight set victories of JU and UNF

In what was supposed to be the FGCU volleyball team’s toughest match, the Eagles made it look easy, sweeping JU Friday night 25-21, 25-20, 25-20. The victory gave FGCU a share of first place in the ASUN Conference, along with Jacksonville and Kennesaw State. Mallory Mattingly began the scoring, giving the Dolphins a quick 2-0 lead. The Eagles then went on an 8-3 scoring run, in large part to Kaitlan Krivdo, who finished with six kills on the night. JU went on a run of their own and turned the score around from down 8-5 to ahead 9-8. Freshman Cortney VanLiew was dominant on offense and defense, accounting for 12 kills and 13 digs. “It was a really good atmosphere out there tonight. We all played extremely well on defense and floor. Overall, we played good team volleyball in the match. Coach really prepared us well for conference play and throughout our current winning streak,” VanLiew said. In the second set, Amanda Carroll was active as the team raced to a 3-0 start. The Dolphins put pressure on the Eagles, producing a 3-0 run of their own to go on top 8-7. With FGCU leading late 22-17, Jacksonville went on a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to two points at 22-20, forcing the Eagles to burn their final timeout of the set. The FGCU volleyball team will have another back-to-back on its schedule, as they face off against North Florida Saturday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. The Eagles (10-6, 2-1) are led offensively by Amanda Carroll, Cortney VanLiew, and Daniele Serrano. Their opponent, the Ospreys (7-11, 0-3), who are still looking for their first road victory (0-7) and first conference victory (0-3), are led by Carina Hoff (186 kills) and Taryn Griffey (158 kills). Playing in a non-conference regular season game, the Eagles defeated FIU for the second time this season, moving 13-6 on the season. Volleyball Completes Ninth Sweep On Season

The FGCU volleyball team returned back to Alico Arena and dominated USC Upstate 25-17, 25-18, 25-19. The Eagles began the match on a 3-0 run, in large part to an Amanda Carroll kill, who continues to produce offensively on a nightly basis. Carroll was honored pre-game in recognition of her reaching 1,000 kills on the season. The Eagles were able to stretch their lead to 12-5, as Daniele Serrano produced two kills. The FGCU volleyball team will return home, as they continue ASUN play versus USC Upstate, Friday Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. Their longest road trip of the season included visits to North Carolina, Indiana, Daytona Beach, Deland, Georgia and Tennessee. FGCU’s big three on offense, led by Amanda Carroll, Cortney VanLiew and Daniele Serrano, have a combined total of 490 kills. After losing its first conference game Friday to Kennesaw State, the FGCU volleyball team dominated the 2016 ASUN Champion Lipscomb in four sets the following night―25-18, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23. FGCU started the first set off strong with two quick kills from Amanda Carroll and Cortney VanLiew, giving the Eagles an early 2-0 lead. Volleyball goes 2-1 at Wildcat Classic with wins over Wofford and Davidson

The FGCU volleyball team finished 2-1 at the Wildcat Classic after defeating Wofford and Davidson, but fell to Georgia in three sets.  Against Wofford, the Eagles swept the Terriers in three sets, with a dominant performance from Amanda Carrol, who became the third player – second in DI history – to reach 1,000 career kills.   In the match against Davidson, the Eagles were down 2-1 but had a dominant comeback with a fourth set win, pushing the game to a fifth set.    In the match against Georgia, FGCU went down quickly but battled back in the third set, only to fall to the Bulldogs as they secured a three-set victory.   Freshman outside hitter Cortney VanLiew and sophomore middle blocker Daniele Serrano were both named to the Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team following the tournament.  VanLiew recorded 44 kills and had 27 digs over the three matches, while Serrano added 23 kills and five blocks.  After trailing 2-1 in the opening set against Wofford, FGCU rattled off four straight points to take a 5-2 lead, and from there, they never trailed.   In a decisive third set, the Eagles were forced to take a timeout after the Terriers put up five consecutive points to take a 10-9 lead. Yet, FGCU came out strong with seven-straight points to take a 16-10 lead and an eventual 25-18 match victory.   Carroll finished the match with a game-high 18 kills and 19 digs, followed behind Courtney VanLiew, who recorded 13 kills.   On the second day of play, the Eagles first faced off against Davidson.   Despite having a better hitting percentage in the...

The FGCU volleyball team is set to begin the Wildcat Classic Friday, Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m. against Wofford in North Carolina. A doubleheader will occur the following day, with the Eagles taking on Davidson at 12 p.m. and Georgia at 4 p.m. The Eagles are led by junior Amanda Carroll, who leads the team in kills with 85.
