For adults only: A bizarre, funny ‘Sausage Party’

It is no secret that animated productions are no longer just for children in 2016, but Seth Rogen’s “Sausage Party” will certainly be one to hide the children from.

With animated gore, a profanity-ridden script, and a hot dog and bun for its main characters that are sure to provide some sexual innuendos, “Sausage Party” is without question geared toward an adult audience, and not a shy one.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the writer and producer team that brought you “This is the End,” “Superbad” and many more comedy classics, are no strangers to making movies on the absurd side of crazy, but “Sausage Party” looks like it might take the cake.

The trailer begins looking like any old animated movie on par with “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.” It’s so bright and cheery with that classic whistling heart-felt song in the background, that you can’t help wondering why this movie would even need a red band trailer. That is until “food finally learns the truth” and a potato is dropping F-bombs as it’s skinned alive while the other foods in the pantry watch in horror.

Once the foods realize they’re not going to the pleasant “eternity” that they imagined while waiting in the supermarket, the story turns into one of escape as the main character, a hot dog, voiced by Rogen himself, tries to get back to the supermarket and warn everyone else about the peril they’re due to face.

Its outrageous plot isn’t the only thing groundbreaking about this film, as it is Rogen’s first-ever animated movie and could pave the way to have more adult-geared cartoon movies playing in our future.

For whatever reason, maybe for a lack of funding or estimated audience, adult cartoons have been slim to none on the silver screen. This is despite the fact that they’re becoming increasingly popular on television, a wave that started with the Simpsons in the 90s and carries on today with adult cartoons on Adult Swim and FOX and other television outlets, that take up a significant amount of air time.

The trailer was released via Rogen’s personal Twitter and is stirring up a lot of buzz from fellow celebrities. Edward Norton reached out to Twitter calling the movie “a work of art” as well as Rogen and Goldberg’s “ultimate masterpiece of absurdity, bordering on surrealism.”

Pop sensation Katy Perry also tweeted that she would “camp out to see it.” Rogen even invited via twitter President Barack Obama to the first official screening.

If its groundbreaking genre entry, bizarrely funny content matter and celebrity endorsements aren’t inspiration enough to go see the movie, premiering on August 12, it’s star-studded cast provides its own recommendation, featuring Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, Bill Hader and many more.
