FGCU turns into school of rock

Amid all the twerking and synthesized beats, it can be hard to remember a time when music was about sticking it to The Man, and making millions of dollars in the process. That was back when Led Zeppelin’s hotel room antics were the stuff of legend and when Axl Rose’s ego turned a world tour into an international incident. Well, even though they might not have been old enough to remember them (or have been alive, in Zep’s case), two girls on campus want to bring those times back.
Jolene Pippin and Natasha Grabowski serve as copresidents for the Rock and Metal Club, which had its first meeting this past Thursday, but became involved for different reasons.
“Jolene wanted to start the club because it’s something she enjoys doing and wants to share it with others,” Grabowski, a junior majoring in resort and hospitality management, said. “My motivation was a protest against the Programming Board, because they weren’t letting rock bands into events like Nest Fest.”
Grabowski explained her history with the genre: After growing up on Queen and Aerosmith, she discovered Green Day as she got older. Later, she moved on to the Grammy winning Halestorm.
This love of hard rock led her to cofound the Rock and Metal Club, an RSO new to this semester. The club’s fi rst meeting just occurred on Sept. 12, with the next tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26, so it’s the perfect time for metalheads to meet like minded fans of the genre.
