Cosplay and Costuming Club raises money to attend convention

The FGCU Cosplay and Costuming Club held its first fundraiser Tuesday, Nov.3.
Club members dressed up as various characters from television shows and movies and tabled at the Library Lawn from 2 to 5 p.m.
Students were able to pay a dollar or any loose change they might have had to the club for a picture with the different characters.
“Basically, we try to get students to go to MegaCon if they are really active in our club,” said Jessica Souza, secretary of the club. “That’s kind of our goal. We’re getting some preliminary funding for the trip, and that way it’s a good incentive for everyone to come to the club and for people to get involved.”
MegaCon stands for Mega Conventions, and it is a large multi-genre convention that caters to the comic book, sci- fi, anime, fantasy and gaming fanatics. Next year, MegaCon will be held in Orlando from May 26 to 29.
Tammy Falcon, the president of the club, dressed as Claire Dearing from “Jurassic World” for the event.
“I really like the ‘Jurassic Park’ movies,” Falcon said. “I figured that she’s a very powerful woman and she owns her own place, and that’d be really cool if I could be like her and own something. Also, dinosaurs are pretty cool.”
Souza dressed as Daenerys Targaryen from “Game of Thrones.”
“‘Game of Thrones’ is one of my favorite shows,” Souza said. “She just rises up as a strong leader. I can really relate to that finding yourself and taking a strong powerful role and I really admire her.”
Both Souza and Falcon said they want to go to the convention to represent FGCU in the best way possible with their club.
“These conventions do have a competitive element,” Souza said. “You can win prizes.”
Another student who is a member of the club dressed up as Brak from the Brak Show, and another one dressed up as Captain America from Marvel Comics.
