The Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance is looking for two students to join the Title IX committee, which is a committee that handles issues related to sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, sexual assault, stalking and domestic or dating violence within the university.
“We want them to come and participate; we want the students’ perspectives,” said Brandon Washington, the Title IX coordinator. “Sometimes, we think we inherently think we know what’s best, but sometimes, we really don’t. We want their opinion on the topics we discuss.”
According to an email sent by the OIEC to all FGCU students, any student can apply for the position by sending an email to [email protected] with his or her contact information and a statement of approximately 100 words explaining why they are interested in becoming a member of the committee. The deadline to send the email is at 5 p.m. Jan. 22.
“The next week after that, we’ll reach out (to students) based on what they write and interview five to 10 students,” Washington said.
Washington said the positions will encompass a 4 to 5-hour month commitment, and students will not get paid.
The students chosen to join the committee will be responsible to attend the Title IV meetings, which are held the last Wednesday of every month in Edwards Hall, suite 114. The committee is composed of approximately 20 members, who are administrative, faculty and staff members.
Also, students will be commended with the responsibility to act as advocates on campus about what the committee does from time to time.
“We may ask them to be ambassadors,” Washington said. “We’re trying to raise awareness and also let students know who they may contact. We do consent training, and we want them to go out and talk about it. We want people to go out and talk about those things.”
