Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, 24, who was killed in a boating accident off of Miami Beach early Sunday, Sept. 25, had cocaine and alcohol in his system at the time of the crash, according to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office.
According to an article published by CNN, Kenneth Hutchins, an Associate Medical Examiner at the office, said that Fernandez was legally drunk at the time of his death with a blood-alcohol concentration of .147.
Fernandez and two others, Emilio Jesus Macias and Eduardo Rivero, were found dead after a Coast Guard personnel on duty noticed the boat, which Fernandez owned, was flipped upside down near South Point Beach.
Fernandez suffered blunt-force injuries to the torso and head as well as skull and jaw fractures. The autopsies of Macias and Rivero revealed that their blood-alcohol levels were below the legal limit while Rivero also had traces of cocaine in his system.
