Hillary Clinton and new VP begin campaign trail in Miami

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton chose her running mate on Friday, July 22. Virginia senator Tim Kaine will serve as Clinton’s vice president.
Minutes after Clinton took to Twitter to announce her decision, Kaine tweeted his excitement, stating that he had just gotten off the phone with her and was excited to begin their campaign in Miami.
Clinton and Kaine hit the trail on Saturday, July 23 at Florida International University to a crowd of 5,000. Clinton officially introduced Kaine during the rally. She described him as a “progressive who likes to get things done.”
“Sen. Tim Kaine is everything that Donald Trump and Mike Pence are not,” Clinton said to the crowd.
Kaine, a native of Saint Paul, Minnesota, has served as a U.S. Senator for Virginia since 2012. He was first elected into public office in 1994, winning a seat on the Richmond, Virginia city council. Kaine served as the governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010.
He has acknowledged climate change, supports a few legal restrictions on abortion and supported same-sex marriage since 2013; however, Kaine did campaign against an amendment to the Virginia State Constitution to bar same-sex marriage. Kaine also supports the normalization of U.S.-Cuba relations and the international nuclear agreement with Iran.
He also engaged Spanish-speaking attendees during the rally by greeting them with phrases in the language. Kaine spoke for 40 minutes during the rally.
“I’ve never lost an election,” he said to the crowd. “I’m not about to let that change.”
