SG Senate passes four bills at last meeting

During Student Government’s last official meeting on March 22, the 2015-16 senators passed four bills in second reading.
The FGCU Hammock Club Operational Bill, presented by university outreach chair Ivan Rodriguez, was the first bill passed. They requested $164 worth of hammocks and straps to hold them up.
“My sister goes to UF, and she is extremely into the hammock scene,” Pro Tempore Molly O’Donnell said. “I think it’s a really awesome thing. It’s a really cool way to get in touch with the environment. They’re not asking for much.”
The Hillel Passover Seder Bill, presented by Sen. Jamie Caperton, was passed next. The organization asked for $830 to fund a seder dinner to celebrate passover, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the Jews’ freedom from slavery in Egypt.
“They want everyone on campus to come,” Caperton said. “They’re really excited for this event and can’t wait to have it another year.”
The College Democrats Operational Bill, presented by Sen. Zachary Hill, was the third bill passed. The organization originally asked for $1,286 for a tablecloth and fees for upcoming events, but the $1,000 for event fees was amended to $500, bringing the total down to $786.
“This is great for SG to get behind an upcoming organization,” Hill said.
The largest and last bill of the night, the FGCU Scuba Club Equipment Bill was presented by Sen. Esteban Tavel. The organization asked for $7,640 for new scuba gear, including tanks and wetsuits.
“I think this is a great bill, and I don’t see a reason to not pass it,” Tavel said. “This is a great organization, and they do deserve it.”
