Student creates The College Dump, a classified advertising website similar to Craigslist

The College Dump is an up-and-coming site where college students can sell their unwanted items — from textbooks to apparel. As the No. 1 online classified service for college students, The College Dump offers more than just another version of Craigslist. Students can search for jobs and internships, as well as local and school events.
Founded on the idea of “the student is in charge… just how it should be,” The College Dump was created by Johnathan Marion, an FGCU communication major, and his friends Walter Watson and Ian Lane.
“It started off with wanting to give students a way to get cheap textbooks and for them to set their own prices,” Marion said. Since its start in 2013, the site has become the central hub for all things a college student could need.
The site is free for students to use and requires you to log into your account. When posting an item for sale, users can create a title, upload an image, price their item, write a description and other helpful features that allow for a more accurate purchaser from potential buyers.
Skye Silva, an FGCU freshman studying anthropology, said that even though he had never heard of the site, it sounds like a great concept.
“I totally would check it out,” Silva said. “I don’t know if it has the broad, local appeal that Craigslist has, but it still is a good idea.”
Freshmen Allison Toledo and Adrianna Moore said the site seems like a good idea.
“I’d check it out,” Moore said. “It sounds really great.”
“It seems good for textbooks, like they would be really easy to buy,” said Toledo.
When buying an item, students can contact the seller by sending a message with their name, email and a quick memo. There are categories for all items being sold, including textbooks, electronics, community and a more items category that deals with apparel, transportation, free and miscellaneous items.
The College Dump has plans to expand its branches past FGCU and Florida SouthWestern.
“We’re trying to get different schools other than just FGCU involved,” Marion said.
