Whitney Knight signs overseas to play in Russia with Spartak

Exactly one month ago it was announced that former FGCU women’s basketball standout Whitney Knight was waived by the LA Sparks.
Now, Knight can let out a sigh of relief as she has signed to play in Russia for Spartak just a few days before the start of the new season.
Last month, the former Associated Press honorable mention All-American was waived by the Sparks to make room on the roster for veteran, Sandrine Gruda.

Knight was selected 15th overall in the second round of the 2016 WNBA by the Sparks back in April. During her time with the Sparks, Knight averaged 0.9 points, 0.4 rebounds and 3.9 minutes in just seven games.
Knight tweeted, “Now that it’s official, I am excited to be playing in Russia for Spartak! Looking forward to the new journey.”
Up until a few days ago, Knight was a member of the San Antonio Stars before making her final decision to sign with the club.
Alexander Vasin, head coach of Sparta & K, stated in an interview for their local website, “We chose Whitney for a variety of indicators, and it is fully consistent with the concept of our young team. Find good in attack, her great three-pointer shot and a good defense.”
Regular season for the Sparta & K team begins Oct. 1 with the first round of play in the Russian league against Dynamo M. As of now, Knight is expected to play the guard position.
Last season, the team went to the European Cup and took first place in Group A of the regular season, but lost to Bourges 0-2 in the quarterfinals.
Though this is a young team, the program has had nothing but positive feedback as a number of their players are now with the WNBA.
