FGCU a safe campus thanks to reviews

By Jasmine Lewis Communication senior
I am writing in response to the Sept. 25 article “Campus screens sexual offenders.” I am thrilled to know that Florida Gulf Coast University is concerned enough about students’ safety to review enrolled students, hired teachers and volunteers that are sexual offenders. As a senior here at FGCU, I have always felt as though our campus is extremely safe. While on campus or in student housing, I have never felt like I was being followed by anyone or have been put in a threatening position, nor do I know of anyone who has. I think the fact that occurrences of sexual offenses on campus are slim to none means that FGCU is doing a great job at reviewing those with records to ensure our safety. According to RAINN (rape, abuse, and incest national network), the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, every two minutes someone in the United States is sexually assaulted. It puts my mind at much ease that sexual assault cases are not really happening at FGCU. Not only are these cases pretty much absent on our campus, but FGCU conducts self-defense demonstrations and sexual assault awareness programs periodically during the year in case students find themselves in a threatening position. I applaud FGCU Student Affairs, Admissions and UPD for taking their students’ safety so serious. Reviewing sexual offense records have resulted in a safe campus so far, but it is also up to us students to become aware of the sexual offenders that are on campus. I recommend that all students take a look at the “sexual offender” tab located on the UPD website in order to take responsibility for our safeties as well.
