Unopposed candidates eliminates voter’s dilemma

Finally. Lazy voters at Florida Gulf Coast University will no longer have to go through the hassle of actually researching Student Government candidates or campus issues every year. Thanks to a lack of student involvement and almost no interest, the grueling decision of who to bubble in while Christmas-treeing our ballots is now eliminated from our day-to-day struggles.

After plenty of hard work and deliberation, the FGCU Student Government will have only one candidate running for each executive position for the following year.  The question of who will be our Student Government treasurer, vice president and of course, the student body president will all be decided for us.

The candidates say they are all excited to hear the close election results on Friday. Rumor has it FGCU point-guard Brett Comer will be the only competition as a write-in for every executive position.

Thanks to this initiative, students will now be able to score their promised free “get-out-of-a-parking-ticket” card with little to no effort. However, students will miss out on the highly anticipated political party t-shirts and pool parties that come with campaigning.

On a serious note, this actually isn’t OK.

Hat-tip to the students who are actually running for a position, but why are there so few people willing to have any sort of leadership on this campus? For a school that is quickly growing, it’s not like we don’t have enough students. Our school spirit is without a doubt the best in the A-Sun.

But that’s athletics. So why don’t we care that we have no option in who runs our school?

As a student body that loves our school, we need to actively take interest in who we’re choosing (or not choosing) to run our campus.

This is the stuff that matters, whether your vote does or not.
