FGCU’s CIT opponent looks a little familiar

Corpus Christi’s website (top) and FGCU’s website (bottom) aren’t’ the only similarities between the two mid-major programs.

Florida Gulf Coast University and Texas A&M Corpus Christi have never met, but they seem a little too familiar for comfort.
If you haven’t already just take a look at Texas A&M Corpus Christi’s athletics website. It is a mirror image of FGCU and that is not where the similarities end.
Their campus is set on an island with beaches all around it, hmm ….that sounds familiar. Check.
Their colors are blue and green. Check.
One NCAA Tournament men’s basketball appearance. Check.
Fifteen NCAA Sports (six men and nine women). Check.
Their star player, John Jordan, is a facilitating point guard. Yeah, we have Brett Comer.
TAMU-CC’s basketball program started in 1999, FGCU’s 2002.
Their coach had the dream of building a program that could stand the test of time like of a VCU. Wow, FGCU men’s head coach Joe Dooley said a little something like that too.
Both mid-major programs. Check.

Azul the Eagle and Izzy the Islander. Check, both make no sense.
Relatively small student body. Check.
A student-run newspaper delivered once a week with a website, even though on our campus our student politicians have no idea who we are. Check.
First 15 seed to make it to the Sweet Sixteen. Yeah, that’s all ours. Discussion over.
 
The FGCU men’s basketball team will host Texas A&M, Corpus Christi in the first round of the College Insider Post Season Tournament (CIT) Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Alico Arena. The game will be televised on ESPN3.
