FGCU women’s volleyball’s Courtney VanLiew and Dana Axner were awarded the ASUN player and defensive player of the week, respectively, after their excellent play over the weekend.
This came after the Eagles went 3-0 in the Homewood Suites Classic, where both VanLiew and Axner played a huge role in the team’s success.
VanLiew, a junior from Seymour, Indiana, had an ASUN-best 52 kills, adding 22 digs and four serving aces. These statistics through three matches landed her a spot on the Homewood Suites Fort Myers All-Classic team.
“I thought Cortney showed a lot of progress in first contact and that has been an area of emphasis for her over the past few months,” Botsford said. “She also showed a lot of patience at the net with her attacking and was big within our net defense.”
Sophomore Dana Axner, along with being named defensive player of the week, went on to win MVP of the Homewood suites classic with her ASUN-best 69 digs. Only starting her sophomore year, Axner has racked up 693 digs, putting her in eighth place for the program’s Division I era list.
“Dana also showed that she has progressed in terms of serve receive,” Botsford said. “Her role has grown a lot since last fall and, while her defense was at a high level all weekend, her serving and passing was a difference-maker in those matches.”
The Eagles will now travel to the University of Miami this weekend to take part in the Hurricane Invitational where they will match up against USF, Auburn and George Washington University.
