Women’s golf finishes fifth at Florida Challenge

The FGCU women’s golf team traveled to the Black Diamond Ranch Quarry Course in LeCanto on Monday, Feb. 1 to compete in the Florida Challenge.
Led by senior Sara Detlefsen, the Eagles finished fifth against strong in-state rivals.
The Eagles went up against four Florida teams in the two-round event. The teams included FSU, UCF, FIU USF and nationally ranked UF. FGCU carded a total score of 625 (317, 308) putting them at 49 over par for the day.
“Round one was a bit of an adjustment for the girls, getting back into the swing of tournament competition,” head coach Sarah Trew said. “I was proud of the way we fought to the finish and showed improved short game and course management to post a better number in round two.”
Detlefsen played a strong two rounds during the tournament, earning herself a top-15 finish. In the morning round, Detlefsen scored a 78. Later, Detlefsen improved with a score of 73, giving her a total of 151 for the day. Senior Mei Khuan Yong also had a good two rounds, placing 24th in the competition.
The Eagles will start full tournament play for the spring season next week at the Mid-American Match Play Challenge. Hosted by Bowling Green at the Lakewood Ranch Country Club, FGCU will compete in the two-day event on Feb. 8 and 9.
