Just 24 hours after officially signing with MLS club Columbus Crew, former FGCU midfielder Rodrigo Saravia was called up to play for the Guatemalan senior National Team on Friday, Feb. 5.
Saravia, who officially signed on with the club on Thursday, Feb. 4, was called up in time for Guatemala’s international friendly against Honduras on Wednesday, Feb. 10.
According to the club, this is Saravia’s second time being called up to the senior team, his first since signing with Columbus. Saravia spent this past summer playing for the U23 Guatemalan National Team and previously at the U20 level.
The reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year was picked as the No. 19 overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft last month and has been training with the club in its preseason workouts since.
Saravia becomes the club’s 10th player on the current roster to earn a call up from a senior national team under head coach Gregg Berhalted.
