Police beat: Tech problems, wildlife, illegal swimming

Technological problems

A complainant called UPD at 9:13 p.m. March 13 and said she was unable to turn off the alarm of the Eagle Guardian Rave App on her iPhone 6 and needed help to do it. UPD then closed the case from the dispatch side on the app, so it automatically closed on her phone, too.

Illegal swimming

Somebody called UPD and reported a group of people was swimming at 2:25 a.m. March 14 in North Lake Village behind the Honors building. A UPD officer found four people swimming and asked them to leave.

Drug case

UPD stood by at 5:30 p.m. March 14 while the housing administrator on call searched a room in Building M at North Lake Village. The housing administrator found six glass pipes, a grinder and a very small amount of leafy green substance, which later tested positive for marijuana. The UPD officer put the pipes and grinder in evidence for destruction and forwarded the case to the Office of the Dean of Students.

Suspicious person

A complainant told a UPD officer at 3:20 p.m. March 15 that a red-haired woman was going around the second floor of Reed Hall asking where she could buy books. The complainant said the suspect was wearing jeans and a black t-shirt. The UPD officer was unable to find her.

Turtle incident

A complainant called UPD at 4:08 p.m. March 15 to report a turtle was unable to cross the road because of the curb on FGCU Boulevard. The turtle was gone when the UPD officer arrived.

Alligator incident

A complainant reported an alligator was between Everglades Hall and SoVi Dining at 4:24 p.m. March 15. A UPD officer stood by until the gator was able to go between the white security bars on its own time.

Parolee checkup

A parole officer requested UPD to check on a parolee at 4:22 p.m. March 16. A UPD officer checked Osprey Hall in South Village but was unable to contact the subject.

Lock cut off

The Physical Plant called UPD at 11:13 a.m. March 16 to stand by while they cut off a lock from a locker. The lock belonged to a faculty member in the Fitness Center at Alico Arena.

Campus preacher

Campus Reservations called UPD at 1:00 p.m. March 16 to stand by while a staff member requested the campus preacher to move from the Library Lawn to the free speech area in the Student Plaza. The preacher complied.

Car boot

Parking Services called UPD to put a boot on a silver Saturn in Parking Lot 5 at 1:58 p.m. March 16. Then, called back at 2:05 p.m. and canceled the request since the owner had already left with the car.

Acid victim

Lee County Sherriff’s Office called UPD at 9:14 p.m. March 16 because a student had called them and said she had smoked marijuana and was confused. EMS came to campus and went to the scene at Eagle Hall in South Village. However, the student refused transport. Then, at 11:38 p.m., the housing administrator on call contacted UPD and said the same student was confused again and seemed to be freaking out. Lee Control sent EMS back to campus, and the student was taken to Gulf Coast Hospital. Then, an alleged female friend of the victim told a UPD officer they had done an unknown amount of acid earlier in the evening.

Welfare check

A complainant called UPD at 2:15 a.m. March 19 and said a guy was sending her suicidal text messages, and she was worried for his safety. A UPD officer knocked on the subject’s room in Building T in North Lake Village, but nobody answered. Then, the officer was able to contact the subject with the help of the housing administrator on call. The officer then gave him the information to contact Counseling and Psychological Services on campus.

Mobile tip

A complainant used the Eagle Guardian Rave app at 3:14 a.m. March 19 to report a red Volkswagen Jetta drunk driver on campus. UPD asked where, and the complainant said the driver had left South Village 10 minutes ago. UPD searched the area but didn’t find anyone. Then, at 4:09 a.m., the complainant contacted UPD again and asked if they had found the driver. UPD said they couldn’t talk about another person. The complainant then asked if she should continue calling UPD or call 911 instead, to which UPD said they couldn’t answer. Then, the complainant said, “For a university help line, this is completely useless.”

Hit and run

A UPD officer spotted that the light post at the corner of FGCU Lake Parkway East was knocked over at 5:12 a.m. March 19. The officer also noticed there was oil on the ground, so UPD started to search for a car around campus with a leakage. Also, the Physical Plant was contacted because the light pole was completely detached from the ground. UPD found the car at 7:27 a.m. in Parking Garage 1 and booted it for evidence. The driver eventually met with UPD at 3:40 p.m. and admitted to committing the hit and run.
