Justin Timberlake’s new single as animated as the soundtrack it belongs to

Following the success of “The 20/20 Experience,” pop star Justin Timberlake took a three-year break from music until Thursday, May 5 when a video of his single to come the following morning was released on Vevo.
The single, titled “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” is to be the theme of Dreamworks’ latest, “Trolls,” a film based on the hideously adorable troll dolls. Timberlake will not only be a cast member but also the executive music producer of the film. Timberlake, who had previously given his voice to Artie in Dreamworks’ “Shrek the Third,” is amongst many other pop stars in the animated genre, including Taylor Swift as Audrey in “The Lorax,” Beyonce as Queen Tara in “Epic,” Miley Cyrus as Penny in “Bolt” and Rihanna as Tip in “Home.”
“Can’t Stop the Feeling,” though composed for an animated children’s film, still delivers on Timberlake’s usual infectious catchiness and vocal range, reminiscent of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” penned for “Despicable Me 2.” The song will please fans of “The 20/20 Experience,” especially those who most enjoyed “Let the Groove In” and the like. Unfortunately, for fans of circa 2000s Timberlake, the song is not the slow, sensual sound you’re likely hoping for. The lyrics are a PG version of Timberlake’s usual dance tunes, squeaky clean from start to finish.
“I can’t stop the feeling, so just dance, dance, dance,” Timberlake croons for the majority of the four minutes.
And, dance they do in the video released of the single. The 35-year-old new father is joined by fellow “Trolls” cast members Gwen Stefani, Anna Kendrick, James Corden, Icona Pop (Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo), Kunal Nayyar and Ron Funches.
“Can’t Stop the Feeling” has already jumped to No. 2 on the iTunes charts as of Friday afternoon. “Trolls” will be in theaters Nov. 4, and its soundtrack, including “Can’t Stop the Feeling” as well as a cover of “True Colors” by Kendrick and Timberlake, will be released Sept. 23.
