Mullings’ brace propels Men’s Soccer past Jacksonville

The FGCU men’s soccer team (5-6-2) defeated Jacksonville University by a score of 4-2, Saturday evening, behind a brace from O’Vonte Mullings.
Jacksonville created the first goal-scoring opportunity of the game with a shot from Inti Antunez that was saved by Connor Gavigan in the second minute.
After that chance, the next 18 minutes saw FGCU gain momentum in the match with five goal-scoring opportunities before Mullings gained possession of the ball, dribbled around the Dolphins defense and smashed his shot past the Jacksonville goalkeeper to put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 19th minute.
FGCU continued to pressure Jacksonville throughout the middle of the first half before scoring another goal in the 37th minute. It was unclear who originally scored the goal, as it was initially credited to Aiden Jokomba and then as an own goal by Jacksonville, but the PA announcer finally said the goal was credited to O’Vonte Mullings, which became his second goal of the night.
Jokomba then snagged a goal of his own in the 40th minute after Miguel Perez capitalized by pick-pocketing the ball from a Jacksonville defender trying to possess the ball near their penalty area.
Mullings tried to secure a third goal first-half in the 44th minute, but his shot was saved from the Dolphins goalkeeper preventing the early hat-trick.
Gabriel Simoneau pulled a goal back for the Dolphins in the 68th minute from a long ball over the top of the Eagles defense by a Jacksonville defender.
Jacksonville missed a crucial opportunity to tighten the game when Kai Bennett missed a one-on-one goal-scoring opportunity off of a counter-attack with in the 70th minute.
FGCU capitalized on a counter-attack of their own when Joao Burti scored his second goal of the season in the 77th minute.
Jesus Colombo scored the Dolphins’ second goal of the match in the 84th minute as the game after a ball was slotted through the Eagles defense.
FGCU outshot Jacksonville 22-14 during the match, a total which also is their season-high for shots in a game.
Men’s soccer looks to capitalize on their win and ride the momentum as they go on the road to play Liberty on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m.
