FGCU women’s volleyball defeated No.1 Kennesaw State in four sets on Sunday (25-21,25-13,21-15,25-9), moving the Eagles into 1st place in the ASUN standings.
Chelsea Lockey, sophomore, had an amazing day as she racked up 35 assists, adding nine digs, five kills, two block assists, one solo block, and an ace.
“I thought today was a really good all-around effort from each and every player,” Lockey said. I thought we all carried our own weight, and I think that really showed on the court to what we could do when we play our games.”
This is FGCU’s sixth straight conference win, moving them into the first place spot as Liberty loss to Stetson.
“I’m really pleased with the girls the way they were executing, especially on the defensive end,” FGCU head coach Matt Botsford said. “I thought that was a major factor, our ability to control a really good offense in Kennesaw State, both with the blocking and the floor defense.
Cortney VanLiew, junior, led the Eagles once again with 11 kills, tallying her 17th double-digit kill game of the season.
The Eagles also had twelve fewer errors than Kennesaw State, a huge factor in FGCU coming out with the win.
Next for the Eagles will be heading to Miami to take on FIU on Wednesday, Oct. 16, starting at 6 p.m.
