Small Plane Crashes in Naples on New Year’s Morning
Shortly after Collier County rang in the New Year, A Beechcraft Bonanza A36 light aircraft crashed after takeoff in Naples. The events that lead up to the crash are now under a federal investigation by the FAA and NTSB which will likely take months.
The crash occurred in heavy fog when the aircraft experienced engine issues.
The pilot failed to file a flight plan, a violation of FAA rules according to NBC 2. The Pilot also attempted to communicate its departure with the Fort Myers air traffic control which was closed at the time instead of the following protocol and communicating with Miami air traffic control.
All occupants were unharmed and refused medical treatment.

Former Florida Governor Kenneth “Buddy” MacKay dies at 91
Kenneth “Buddy” MacKay, who served as the Governor of Florida from 1990 to 1994 died in his home this past week according to CBS News.
MacKay has been credited with helping Miami through financial troubles and organizing the response to Hurricane Andrew.
Past governor Jeb Bush sent his condolences to MacKay’s family, “Columba and I send our deepest sympathies to Anne and the MacKay family as they mourn the loss of their beloved husband and father,” Bush said in a statement on X.
MacKay leaves behind his wife, and his four sons, all of which were with him at the time of death.

President Biden denied a potential $15 billion merger of U.S. Steel with Japanese company Nippon Steel citing concerns of national security.
U.S. Steel, a company responsible for steel production in the United States, has been struggling financially. Aging furnaces paint a grim future for the company, so it’s been looking for a buyer.
The decision has been controversial in the political landscape, with some members of the Republican Party saying it endangers the competitiveness of America on the global market while those in the Democratic Party say it was a smart decision to protect union jobs as well as protect national security according to CBS News.
