The FGCU Division II Lacrosse Club has seen significant success since its creation in 2010. President Collin Blocker is proud of the club’s ranking and wants to continue to grow the legacy.
“FGCU lacrosse, since it was founded, has always been a top team in the nation,” Blocker said. “We are once again headed to conference playoffs in late April, and currently on track to make nationals in early May.”
The team has worked hard on and off the field, creating memories and bonding through their friendships.
“So not much has changed for us on the field,” Blocker said. “Off the field, however, we are constantly trying to build tradition within the team, holding events like an Alumni BBQ, which was done for the first time this year.”
With all the club’s progress, they have three main objectives:
- Win their Conference competitions.
- Win their National competitions.
- Be ranked the best club at FGCU.
The club practices three to four times a week and plays most weekends through the spring. With 30 players on the roster, they want to continue increasing those numbers.
“We want to be the best in Florida, so guys always lock in and focus during practice and film sessions,” Phelps said.
Blocker said he first saw the team when he toured FGCU.
“When I came on my college tour, the team was playing a game that weekend, so I stayed to watch and immediately knew that I wanted to play for the club,” Blocker said. “This was the best decision I’ve made in college.”
Justin Phelps is a newcomer to the club and has enjoyed his experience so far. Despite being new, he is a veteran when it comes to lacrosse.
“I’ve played lacrosse all my life, FGCU’s MLAX club had a reputation of being good and I liked that, it’s actually one of the reasons I came to FGCU instead of a few other schools.”One of the new upgrades the team achieved this year was the team store, which was created so that the team’s members and fans could buy shirts and other clothing. With this addition, Stanley believes a lot more is to come.
“We have always had high expectations for our club competitively. In the last three years, we have made the national tournament twice,” Stanley said. “We are hopeful to make a return this year, and we aim to be a highly competitive team while still providing fun for the members.”
The team plays in the SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association. With a win over conference foe Miami (FL), FGCU ended the regular season with an 8-3 and 2-1 division record, which advanced the team to the 2025 SECL Division II Tournament at Bolles High School on April 18-19.
The club is a student-funded program that appreciates the support of FGCU faculty and students. To learn more about the club and its upcoming games, visit its website or follow it on Instagram.
“We’re going to Nationals,” Phelps said. “All the guys will not stop at anything less than that.”
