The FGCU baseball team concluded the regular season with a 4-0 shutout over Stetson on May 17 at Swanson Stadium. With the win, they enter the 2025 ASUN Baseball Championship as the third seed in the Graphite Division and will face off against No.2 Lipscomb on Tuesday, May 20, in Deland, Florida, to start tournament play.
Before FGCU (26-28, 16-14 ASUN) advanced to the postseason, the team faced the Hatters in a late-season cruege match.
Stetson (37-19, 24-6 ASUN) traveled to Southwest Florida with nothing on the line, as the team locked up the first seed of the Graphite Division several weeks ago. As for the Eagles, they needed to win two games of the series to solidify the third seed.
The game’s first two frames went scoreless between both teams. The closest either team got to scoring was off the bat of FGCU’s Evan Dempsey in the first inning, who singled, paired with poised baserunning, put him on third. FGCU was unable to capitalize.
The Eagles went to work in the third inning with two runs. Jake McKee began the scoring run off with a double down the right field line to put him and teammate Nathan Gagnon on base. A sacrifice groundout by Demspey pushed him through home, followed by a Cayden Hessemyer RBI single through the middle that yielded a McKee run.
A 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth frame, courtesy of Eagles pitcher Logan Baisley, set the tone for another two-run inning for a 4-0 lead in the bottom frame. Harrison Povey connected on a solo home run to right field for his 15th of the season. After a pair of walks, Gagnon singled through the right side to send an RBI.
FGCU’s pitching staff handled business with Chase Kriebel, who allowed two hits and two walks over four innings. Logan Baisley’s three frames of relief complemented Kriebel’s pitching, allowing one hit and one walk. Ryland Bozenhard closed for one hit and no walks to secure the shutout. With the victory, the Eagles took the series 2-1 to close out the regular season.
