The FGCU volleyball team showed no mercy, sweeping the first three sets to record its third straight ASUN victory against West Georgia on Friday.
The Eagles (8-5, 3-0) entered the matchup with a two-game win streak and looked to remain undefeated in ASUN play.
Hitters Julija Grubisic Cabo and Barbara Koehler both recorded 10 kills, Setter Eliska Vytiskova tallied 20 assists and Libero Anna Marzella had 12 digs in the contest.
For the first 15 serves, the game remained close until it wasn’t. The Eagles turned on the jets for the next 15, taking the lead by an assertive 10 points.
A series of desperation blocks from hitter Camila Soto and blocker Iyanna Battle throughout the first set allowed Koehler to keep the kills coming, finishing the set with four. A combination of a solid defense and perpetual offense gave FGCU control of the early game, winning the first set 25-14.
The Eagles refused to slow down in the second set, taking an 8-2 lead in the first 10 serves. Blocker Abby Toeniskoetter dominated the second set, serving two straight service aces. The Eagles ran into a slump shortly after, with three consecutive attack errors, which allowed UWG to narrow the score to 8-5.
FGCU had a second sequence of attack errors to bring the set within two, 11-9, before Koehler and Toeniskoetter delivered back-to-back kills, pushing the score to 14-9 after a UWG service error. The Eagles kept their foot on the pedal, winning the second set decisively, 25-14.
The Wolves (2-14, 0-4) took an early lead of 6-1 after three kills and two attack errors. FGCU’s slow start prompted head coach Thais Baziquetto-Allen to call a timeout in hopes of waking up her team.
All it took was some words from Baziquetto-Allen to bring the team back to life. Serve-by-serve, FGCU came closer to evening the score. They eventually tied the game at the 24th serve 12-12. From that point, momentum began to shift in favor of the Eagles in the third set. With a final set score of 25-17, FGCU celebrated its fourth home victory of the season.
Two days later, FGCU hosted and took down Queens University of Charlotte (11-6, 2-2) in four sets. The Eagles secured two wins over the weekend and improved their record to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in ASUN play, tying Jacksonville and Central Arkansas for the top seed in the conference standings.
FGCU will travel to Conway, Arkansas to face Central Arkansas on Oct. 10.
