Me, myself and I: Why putting yourself first sometimes is essential

With a stressful schedule of due dates and commitments, we often forget to leave time for ourselves. We do all this running around completing assignments, finishing chores, and before we know it the day is done. With no “me time” set aside for our enjoyment, we drone on into a monotonous routine of an unappealing workload.

As college students, we have a limited time to take advantage of the freedom we currently possess. This is our time to explore and get the most out of our college experience. It should not be spent living at the library, never seeing the light of day. Of course, school should be our first priority, but you can’t forget about you after all of your accomplishments. Reward yourself. After working tirelessly to perfect your grades you deserve a pat on the back.

It’s OK to make time for yourself. Want to watch an episode of your latest Netflix buzz before you start that paper? Why not? After a long day of hard work, you’ve earned it. It could be exactly what you need to stay motivated and keep on the track toward success. Everything in moderation, my friends. Don’t be afraid to treat yourself. Want to paint your nails after a long day? You deserve it. Want to hit the gym and blow off steam after a stressful exam? You need it.

No matter how busy you may be, you should never be too busy to focus on your needs. And, if you are, you need to take a day off. Your health and joy is not something that should be compromised. Sometimes an exhausting schedule can get the best of us. The key is balancing the work and the play. Just remember that you do deserve that break. Go out for ice cream with friends. Start that book you’ve wanted to read. Don’t forget that you and your happiness matter.
