FGCU men’s tennis opened its season play at home last weekend.
FGCU men’s tennis wrapped up the final day of the Bedford Cup on Sunday, Sept. 27. The short-lived action began at 8:30 a.m. before rain cut the day short.
The final day consisted of the finals and semifinals of singles play and the final round of doubles. Due to injuries and teams leaving, players were able to pick up matches throughout the day as well that were not listed on the draw.
Competing for the B Flight Doubles title, Eduardo Alfonzo and Chris Perrigan faced Kevin Bondar and Bernard Tefel of Miami. The Eagles held a 4-3 advantage and looked to take control of the match to begin the day. The Hurricanes came back to even the match at four, and won 8-4.
Lucas Vaz competed in his final singles event against Carlos Waitman of Florida A&M. Vaz won the first set 6-3 but was forced to a tiebreaker in the second set. The senior pulled off a 7-6 (8-6) win to take the semifinal match. The final was not played due to the weather.
Andres Alfonzo and Vaz later entered a doubles match against Chris Barrus and Inaki Espindola of UCF. After a hard-fought match, the Eagles were defeated 8-6.
The championship match was suspended due to rain and will resume in Gainesville as the Gators represented both sides of the final.
