Take your family to class this weekend

Eagle Family Weekend is held once a year at FGCU, during the fall semester. This year, the three days of family fun will take place Nov. 6 to 8.
Eagle Family Weekend is specifically designed for the families and friends of FGCU students to gain knowledge about the university and feel a greater connection to the institution. During the weekend, a variety of both on-campus and off-campus activities have been planned to encourage family participation and interaction with members of the university community.

Andrew Cinoman, director of New Student Programs at FGCU, said Eagle Family Weekend provides time to reflect on the local community and its values, which includes a wide range of ideas, beliefs, and cultures. This event serves to help families strengthen their commitment to FGCU through a collective experience that builds a foundation for their lasting involvement with the university in the future.

To attend Eagle Family Weekend, parents and other adult guests each pay $50 for the entire weekend of activities and students or child guests each pay $20 for the weekend. Some of the activities planned for this year’s program include the Eagle Family Weekend carnival, morning yoga on the waterfront, Bower School of Music fall concert under the stars, and FGCU D2 club hockey vs. Bryant University at Germain Arena.

Cinoman encourages students and families to attend the event because of the opportunity to experience what FGCU and the neighboring community have to offer.
“Our focus is to provide a wide variety of events that are academic, social, cultural, athletic and personal,” Cinoman said. “It’s all about giving families a chance to experience what college life is like from a student’s perspective, and it’s so much fun because there is something for everyone, younger siblings included. We want to give families a chance to spend time with their students and reconnect, but we also hope that they learn more about the university and the surrounding community while they are here.”
Shanley Mastin, junior biology major, believes that the weekend-long event is a way for your relatives to share your appreciation of FGCU.

“I think that is a really cool event,” Mastin said. “If I lived on campus, I would definitely go with my family because it would help my family understand why I chose the university. I like the fact that it allows your siblings to go as well.”
If students have brothers, sisters, parents, and/or friends who want to go back to school, they should attend Eagle Family Weekend. The students’ loved ones will have the opportunity to experience everything what they experience on a daily basis at FGCU.

Peterson Herard, a junior political science major, is considering participating in Eagle Family Weekend this year.
“Eagle Family Weekend sounds like a terrific event and I would certainly attend it with my family,” Herard said. “This is a marvelous way for families of current students to feel what it’sliketobeanEagle, butalsoto see what FGCU is about and the reason why we are growing at such a rapid rate. At FGCU, we are a family paving the way for our future Eagles. This event will help our legacy live on.”
