Hey FGCU! Im Katie Fogarty, ENTV reporter for Eagle News TV. We’ll be dissecting the University Police Department’s reports of January.
Last wednesday on January 20th, UPD recieved a report of a sexual assault on campus. The report said it occurred on Monday, 9 p.m., at West Lake and the victim and suspect met on a social media dating app. The identity of the suspect is not affiliated with fgcu. A criminal investigation is underway by law enforcement.
Also on January 20th, UPD received a report of a woman at Howard Hall refused to leave the building unless she met with President Mike Martin. The woman recorded the encounter as UPD told her that she could solve her issue with a representative of President Martin. The woman was escorted out of the building and will be charged with trespassing if she returns at a later time. While the woman was not confrontational, she refused to leave.
On Monday, January 18th, there was a fight in the SOVI parking garage B. Two female students were yelling racial slurs at each other. When the osprey front desk saw the incident they called UPD on the fight.
UPD also responded to a scene on Thursday, January 14th where a teacher called saying that a light fixture exploded in griffin hall room 172. The class had to move outside after the explosion. It was found that the explosion occurred due to a ballast. No one was hurt, and the classroom is now safe to use.
Also on January 14th, UPD evacuated the second floor of osprey hall in SOVI when students complained of having difficulty breathing. The UPD press release said there appeared to be an irritant in the air on the east wing.
Medical personnel arrived on scene. A small amount of irritant remained but was not a health hazard. Students were allowed back in and no one was injured.
On Saturday, January 9th, two university students were seen on the security cameras playing hockey while skateboarding at the fourth floor in parking garage B at SOVI!
UPD gave them a verbal warning saying that skateboarding is not permitted in the parking garage.
And that’s all for your UPD press release recap. Stay on the lookout for our next ENTV UPD beat. I’m Katie Fogarty, reporting for Eagle News TV.
