A civic duty to pie a professor in the face

11046748_1060949910587456_6575042569695314248_nOn March 20, Florida Gulf Coast University will have its first ever Pie Day Friday. The idea is simple. Students will get the opportunity to throw a pie at a professor’s face if they pay $1. If they pay $2, they’ll get the opportunity to rub the pie on the victim’s face.

All of the proceeds will be donated to Abuse, Counseling, and Treatment. ACT is a private, nonprofit agency that serves victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

A group of five students from a Civic Engagement Class have chosen ACT as their community partner and will be holding Pie Day from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday March 20 on the library lawn.

Cayla Sloan, a junior journalism major, is one of the proud creators of the event.

“Our main goal is to raise awareness and prevention,” Sloan said. “We’re looking into raising money, but by raising advocacy we will give people the knowledge to help themselves if it ever happens to them.”

“Twelve professors have signed up,” Sloan said. “The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences signed up. She said she would challenge other deans to do it as well.”

According to the official ACT website, a sexual assault occurs every 1.6 minutes in this country. That’s a shocking statistic. What is even more shocking is that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 7 boys will be sexually assaulted by the age of 13.

“Sexual assault is a big issue and it is not getting addressed correctly,” Sloan said. “A common thought is ‘Oh, it will never happen to me.’ The reality is this can happen to anyone.”

“Hopefully, it will be a really good turnout,” Sloan said. “It’s fun to pie people.”
