Lecture addresses disability sensitivity

Adaptive Service held its first event, I Am Able, on Sept. 24 in the Cohen Center Ballroom.

“Everyone is normal. The word disability is a bitter taste in my mouth. We’re going to get rid of that word,” Tony Peterson said.

Fewer than 20 FGCU students attended the event, which allowed FGCU students to learn more about disabilities and to become more aware because anyone can become disabled at any time. One of the challenges people with disability face the most is people’s attitude.

“People view us differently,” said Matthew Walzer, a sophomore sports management major. “People view us as being incapable of taking care of ourselves. The only disability in life is the people with attitude. They are the ones with attitude, not us. Everyone is equal, but society separates some and using the term disability, not to be able to perform or function as society calls it.”
