All new undergraduate, transfer and dual-enrolled students at FGCU are required to take a course on drugs, sex and alcohol. This course is found online, and it is called MyStudentBody Essentials course.
Students who do not complete the course and pass the final tests receive a hold on their school accounts, restricting them from registering for spring classes until they pass the test.
The test consists of different chapters to read on each section (i.e. drug awareness, safe sex, etc.) These sections are thorough and aim to teach students about details they might not know about these topics. Students are required to take a pre-test before reading each section, and a post-test afterward.
This is the second year this test is being implemented at FGCU, and students have different points of view. Some think that although this test might seem like a great idea, some students do not take it seriously.
“I think this course is helpful for students to take,” said Georgia Hutcheon, a sophomore studying criminal justice. “I think it has eyeopening statistics that are good for us to see. I do not think that students take this course seriously because they do not understand the severity of the outcomes of being irresponsible.”
Other students think this course certainly tries to show students the outcomes of irresponsibility, and that’s good — but it should not be obligatory. There have been arguments that the drug and alcohol portion is similar to the drug and alcohol test teenagers must take for their driving permit.
“I think this was similar, but better,” said Emily Sapp, a junior studying education. “It wasn’t nearly as long [as the driver’s permit drug and alcohol test] and gave the information needed. It was a good refresher of the dangers of drugs and alcohol.”
Undoubtedly, there is a lot of information students can learn about drugs, alcohol and safe sex from these tests.
This course is one of FGCU’s ways of helping to protect and educate its students.
