Trump announces Pence as his running mate

It’s official: Donald Trump has chosen Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate.
The selection of Pence gives Donald Trump a running mate who has strong ties to social conservatives. This section of people within the party was said to have a lot of doubt about Trump and were on the fence about voting for him. Adding Pence as his VP, Trump hopes to gain these votes to put him ahead of Clinton.
Pence is known for the backlash he received on a couple of decisions he made while serving as governor of Indiana. He made a decision to sign a “religious freedom” law that did not fly well with major businesses because they saw it as anti-LGBT. Pence was also in favor of shutting down the government until funding for Planned Parenthood was taken out of the national budget.
Trump’s decision to make Pence his VP could affect the amount of votes he gets from the LGBT community and women, both parties that would have been affected by Pence’s decisions. These votes represent a large portion of the population come election day.
In adding Pence, Trump added an individual who has ties with the Koch brothers and other influential donors who have, so far, stayed away from Trump.
Pence is seen as a safe political option for Trump, who also considered New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Although both matched Trump’s stances, they were deemed too risky for the campaign.
During a recent rally with Trump, Pence attacked opponent Hillary Clinton multiple times, proving that he too can attack quickly, as Christie and Gingrich have in the past.
Clinton has expressed her disapproval of Pence, as he “does not look out for the wellbeing of working families, woman and the LGBT community.”
Trump will hold a news conference Saturday morning to discuss his vice presidential pick.
