Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey, has been publicly endorsing Trump ever since he suspended his presidential bid on Feb 10, for the 2016 presidential election.
Christie has developed into Trump’s largest supporter and defender. After Christie dropped out of the race, he began to commend Trump like he is some kind of savior.
During a press conference Trump held in Florida, Christie claimed that Trump is the best candidate in the race.
“Tonight is the beginning of Donald Trump bringing the Republican Party together for a big victory this November,” Christie said. “Tonight is the beginning of Donald Trump bringing the people of our nation together to help America win again. And, tonight, in all those states who supported Mr. Trump today, all the ones who voted across this country, our message is to begin to get ready for the fight that is coming this fall.”
During the press conference, Christie stood behind Trump like he was being held captive and Vice President Joe Biden mocked the occurrence during the annual Gridiron Club dinner.
“So, tonight, I call on Donald Trump to be a man of his word — and release Chris Christie right now,” Biden said. “It’s not right. It’s simply not right.”
Christie’s advocacy for Trump was clearly an effort to be his vice president, which is only possible if Trump wins the election.
His endorsement was not only a shameless attempt to gain a high title in the government, but it was also hypocritical because he has severely criticized Trump in the past.
On Feb. 7, 2016, Christie mocked Trump’s incompetence during a speech at a middle school in Hampton, New Hampshire.
“He has not the first idea of how to run a government, not the first idea,” Christie said.
Yet, now, Christie couldn’t be singing his praises more. He went from insulting Trump to speaking highly of Trump in just a few short weeks.
It seems that Christie is desperate to advance his own political prospects, and he has decided that aligning with Trump is the means to achieve that goal.
Before the New Hampshire primary, Christie questioned Trump’s success in the polls and called into question their legitimacy.
“The guy who’s running first in the polls. You know it’s all make-believe, right?” Christie said. “It’s just not real. It’s all for TV.”
Christie is trying to place himself in the position of being Trump’s vice president in the chance that Trump’s hate speech wins him a presidential election.
With Trump’s success in the polls, Christie seems to think that the Republican candidate with the best chance of winning is Trump. However, Christie may have some competition because Ben Carson recently endorsed Trump as well.
I used to believe that Trump’s presidential bid was the most terrifying event in American politics, but the recent support he has been receiving from former candidates is horrifying as well.
Thankfully, it is safe to say that the Democratic candidates will not be advocating for Trump anytime soon because Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have both consistently criticized Trump’s bigotry and prejudice.
