FGCU Volleyball dominated Liberty on Tuesday night, sweeping Liberty in a revenge game from earlier in the season (25-17, 25-20, 25-22).
The Eagles avenged their lone conference loss on the year by defeating Liberty, continuing their 19 straight-set win streak. FGCU is now tied for the second-most wins in the nation with a record of 22-3.
Both teams had a poor performance on the night with low hitting percentages for each squad, but FGCU edged out Liberty .189 to .103, as well as winning the kills on the night 40-34. A 25-17 first set win for the Green and Blue was highlighted by Erin Shomaker destroying an overpass to win the set.
The momentum from the first set carried into a second set lead for the Eagles of 14-8 midway through. Liberty trimmed the Eagles lead to 21-18 late in the set with an impressive stretch. Dana Axner and Cortney VanLiew’s impressive display of digs kept the Eagles from giving up their lead, claiming a 25-20 second set.
Liberty looked to push the match to a fourth set with a bounce-back third set effort, keeping the set close throughout. Though Liberty held got the advantage of the Eagles earlier in the season, the Green and Blue would have no part in another close game.
Erin Shomaker’s 10 kills in the matchup led the way for a 25-22 third set win, the Eagles 19th straight-set win, as well as their 12th straight victory overall.
FGCU is now four wins shy of tying their program record of 16 straight wins from a year ago. The Eagles also clinched a spot in the ASUN tournament with Tuesday night’s win.
The Eagles look to keep their hot streak alive as they remain home for the weekend to face Stetson on Friday, Nov. 1 and North Florida on Sunday, Nov. 3.
