FGCU has two more matches before starting A-Sun action
The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis team (7-5) has two home tournaments this week after a week of being on the road.
The Eagles will play East Carolina University (9-7) on Thursday and Southern Mississippi (10-4) on Saturday. ECU just lost to the University of North Florida on Monday. Prior to the loss, the Pirates were on a seven-game winning streak.
Southern Mississippi is coming off of two wins. They just defeated Southern Illinois University 6-1 on Monday and Arizona 4-2 on Saturday. They are led by sophomore Wen-Po Tseng and junior Tarun Surat. Sophomore Chao-Yu Huang is 7-4 in singles play. The Golden Eagles will compete against Bucknell and Boston before playing FGCU on Saturday.
The Eagles are coming off of a week of play in California. FGCU lost 4-3 to Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara in two close matches. They ended the week with a 4-3 win against No. 72 UC Irvine. Junior Ricky Ventura has been leading the team in singles play. He won two out of his three singles matches this weekend. Sophomore Andres Alfonzo is coming off a clutch match in the UCSB match where he beat his competitor 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to secure the win for the eagles.
The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s tennis team (2-8) will play No. 70 University of Minnesota (9-4) on Monday. The Eagles are coming off of a 6-1 loss against Florida International University on March 2 and play No. 26 Notre Dame (7-4) on Tuesday. The fighting Irish are coming off of a loss against No. 5 Virginia and will play East Carolina University in the morning of the same day they play FGCU.
Minnesota has won four matches in a row. The team’s last two matches against Marquette and Carleton were 7-0 victories. They will play Wisconsin on Friday before coming to FGCU. They are led by redshirt-junior Julia Courter (10-3), senior Aria Lambert (14-7) and junior Paula Rincon-Otero (13-6).
The Eagles are led by Johanna Sterkel, who was the only player to come out with a victory in the FIU match. She currently leads the team with a 7-2 record in singles play.
