The FGCU softball team (2-0) won both their games on opening night, securing wins against Delaware (1-1) and Boston College (1-1).
In the Eagles first matchup of the day, FGCU took down Delaware by a score of 4-1. They were led by a strong pitching performance from Junior Marissa Mesiemore, who had seven impressive innings for the Green and Blue.
She would pitch a complete game, adding eight strikeouts and only giving up four hits in her first win of the 2020 season.
Mesiemore would also send a rocket into the left-field gap, a double that would bring in two runs for FGCU and give them an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The Eagles didn’t stop there as the second inning provided some more runs. McKenna Batterton sent a single up the middle of the infield that would bring in two runs and the score up to 4-0.
Delaware would eventually tack on a run, a double to center would bring in the Blue Hen’s first score of the night.
Both teams wouldn’t score for the rest of the game, which led to FGCU’s victory after seven innings.
The second game of the night would start out different for the Eagles, as Boston College jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
BC would go on to score two more runs in the fourth, on a double and wild pitch that saw their lead increase to 3-0.
The Eagles responded with a scoring barrage of their own as Hope Hernandez’s single up the middle of the infield gave them their first hit on the night, along with two runs to close out the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore and reigning ASUN Freshman of the Year Reedy Davenport would send a double into the left-field gap that would put the game even at 3-3. This would be Davenport’s second hit of the game.
Both teams would fail to score before the seventh, which would send the game into extra innings. In a new International Tiebreaker Rule, the last batter out in the previous inning is placed on second base. This would put Ahnie Jumper into scoring position to start the inning.
BC would then go on to intentionally walk McKenna Batterton, and a sac bunt from Hope Hernandez moved Jumper over to third base. The night would end on a walk-off as Jumper scored on a wild pitch to give FGCU the win 4-3.
FGCU’s next game will be tomorrow night as they take on Georgetown (0-2) at 6 p.m. and LIU (1-1) at 8:15 p.m. to continue their opening weekend.
