Friday night was a great sign for FGCU fans, as the women’s soccer team held an intrasquad scrimmage for their first real action of the year. The Blue and Green squad competed for 90 minutes, and Blue came out with the 1-0 win over Green.
About 55 minutes of game time passed, until Junior forward Alyssa Abbondandolo buried one in the net to put her team on the board.
“With everything that’s been going on for the past eight months or so, it was so nice to have the opportunity to get outside and compete on a beautiful night,” head coach Jim Blankenship said. “It was an awesome time, our players loved it and it was exciting.”
The first half was a grudge match between both squads that continuously kept the other out of scoring position. Both teams managed to get a couple shots on goal, but none that could find the back of the net.
The Green squad took the advantage in shots 5-3, but couldn’t come back to tie up the match before the final whistle blew.
Tonight’s game will be the only match this fall that is held, as their season has been postponed until the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
