First FGCU football scholarship started

Ben Hill Griffin III has donated $12,500 to a football scholarship fund to help Florida Gulf Coast University build a football stadium. Last Wednesday at the FGCU Foundation meeting, Griffin and FGCU President Wilson Bradshaw flirted with the idea of recruiting the first football team.

“Now I just have to find the first football player,” Bradshaw said.

While a stadium will require substantial donations, by Wednesday evening, another donator had contributed $1,000.

If it comes to fruition, this stadium will not be the first the Griffin family has built. Griffin’s father built Ben Hill Griffin stadium, also know as “The Swamp,” at University of Florida.

Griffin has recognized FGCU’s rising sports program, which includes feats such as the men’s basketball team winning the Atlantic Sun tournament and moving to the NCAA last Saturday.

Waiting up to a decade for a football team is too long, Griffin said. With this new football scholarship, Griffin hopes to get the ball rolling on the conception of the FGCU football team.
