Former FGCU standout Chris Sale takes the mound in American League All-Star Game

Heading into the 2016 All-Star break with a league best of 14 wins, former FGCU pitcher Chris Sale will take the mound as the starting pitcher for the American League All-Stars, as he takes on San Francisco Giants’ Johnny Cueto and the National League All-Stars in the 2016 MLB All-Star Game in San Diego.
Earning his fifth consecutive All-Star Game selection, the Lakeland native joins Mark Buehrle and Esteban Loaiza as the only White Sox pitchers to start in an All-Star Game.
“I know that this stuff doesn’t happen a whole lot,” said Sale after being named tomorrow night’s starting pitcher. “I’m just really excited to be able to experience this, starting in the All-Star Game. With all the festivities and all the hype that comes around with the All-Star Game, I’m just really appreciative to be able to experience this for myself and with my family.”
Sale has had a strong first half of the season, starting off 9-0 while posting a 1.58 earned run average (ERA) during his win streak despite his White Sox being only two games above .500 sitting at third place in the American League Central division with a 45-43 record.
Sale’s 14 wins surpass his season win total from the last season, and are the most wins by a starting pitcher heading into the All-Star break since Ubaldo Jimenez tallied 15 wins in 2010.
Posting a 3.38 ERA with 123 strikeouts in 18 games, Sale ranks ninth in the MLB in strikeouts and is on pace to finish the 2016 campaign with 200 plus strikeouts for the fifth consecutive season.
Regarding his strategy when he takes the mound on Tuesday night in Petco Park, Sale said, “There are really no repercussions that come from this game other than just having fun and competing. That’s all I’m really going to try and do. I fully intend on going out there and giving it everything I’ve got for an inning or two, whatever it may be.”
