FGCU wins Cobra-Puma Invitational on home soil

The men’s
golf team won the
C o b r a – P U M A
Invitational for the
third consecutive
year Monday.
They had a 15-shot
lead over Florida
Atlantic University
after the fi rst day
and did not waver
on the fi nal day.
Junior Jack
Hernandez led the
team with a fi fthplace
fi nish after shooting 71-68-74. Senior
Matt Cote placed seventh, shooting 67-
76-71. Also contributing to the team’s win
was junior transfer Blake Biggs, freshman
Jordan Miller and freshman Casper
Howells.
The tournament was held at Miromar
Lakes Golf Club. The team was able to go
into the tournament
confi dent, having
played the course
many times before.
“It was
comfortable knowing
the course so well and
we were able to feel
comfortable on the
teeboxes,” Cote said.
There were
new faces in the
lineup, showcasing
the team’s talent and
competitiveness.
“They all gel well together,” head coach
Brent Jensen said. “Any given week anyone
can play well. It is easier for me because I
know that the guys that are going to go are
going to perform.”
Along with the win for the team,
sophomore Edward Figueroa fi nished tied
for fi rst in individual competition. Last year,
Figueroa won the tournament and came into
the tournament well
prepared.
“I practiced
putting every day
after practice this
week because I have
been struggling this
year,” Figueroa said.
“I didn’t hit the ball
great, but I putted
really well.”
The familiarity
with the course
helped the team win,
and the proximity to
the school made the
tournament different from others.
“They were able to sleep in their own
beds and feel comfortable and feel relaxed in
a tournament atmosphere,” Jensen said.
The team heads to the UNF/Georgia
Southern Intercollegiate Nov. 4-5. It is the
last tournament of the fall season, and the
team hopes to build off of its win this week.
“The mindset going into the next
tournament is to win,” Jensen said. “We are
looking at the weaknesses individually from
this tournament, and working on them to be
that much more ready to go.”
The fi eld for the next tournament
includes a top 25 team and will be a test for
the team.
