The FGCU men’s soccer team (6-6-2) shut out Liberty University away from home Saturday afternoon, 2-0, behind a brace from O’Vonte Mullings.
The Eagles jumped out of the gate early with a goal from Mullings scored in the third minute off an assist from Shak Adams and Jahan Rajaee.
Connor Gavigan kept the scoreline at 1-0 in the 15th minute when he saved a shot from Liberty going towards the bottom right-hand corner of the FGCU goal.
Mullings secured his brace in the 43rd minute when Noah Bushey assisted Mullings by using a one-two pass on the left side of the Liberty penalty area to allow Mullings to find space to score.
In the second half, FGCU outshot Liberty seven to one, but none of the shots found the back of the net and the Eagles lead stayed the same at 2-0.
Mullings now has recorded three braces and is the team’s leading goalscorer with a total of seven goals scored so far this season.
With the assist, Shak Adams moves into second-place, tied with Arion Sobers-Assue for most assists over a career at FGCU with 14, one behind first place, Josey Portillo’s 15.
Following their one-game road stint, men’s soccer returns home to face No. 10 Charlotte on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m.
