Eagles struggle heading into A-Sun Conference Championship tournament

The month of November has been about the FGCU volleyball team ending a losing streak, only to start another.
Coming off of losing three consecutive games, the team bounced Nov. 2 back over USC Upstate, winning the match 3-1 at home. The Eagles were unable to grasp a win in set two, 16-25, after winning the first set 25-23. The third and fourth sets were won 25-19 and 25-22, respectively.
“Tonight was another night where we played inconsistently. We did just enough to win, and that’s always a great thing, but we made it more difficult than it needed to be,” head coach Dave Nichols told FGCU Athletics. He continued on to say “We need to take care of business and get a little bit better.”
Three days later, the team traveled to Jacksonville University. Green and Blue fell behind quickly in the first two sets in the Swisher Gym, losing 18-25 and 20-25. A win was snagged in the third set by the Eagles 25-21 before they fell in the fourth set (22-25) losing the match 3-1.
Senior night approached quickly and the Eagles took on the Stetson Hatters for what would be the last night for some of the women to play together at Alico Arena in regular conference play. The game honored the four seniors on the team: Kaitlin Holm, Karina Mambuca, Ashley Noble and Christine Pinder. FGCU just could not get into the swing of things.
“Today was a really frustrating loss,” Nichols told FGCU Athletics.
“We feel really bad for the seniors on their last day here we didn’t play a particularly sharp game.”
The final score of the match was 20- 25, 13-25, 25-17 and 23-15. The only set the Eagles were able to challenge the Hatters was set three, winning by eight points. The Eagles Atlantic Sun regular season play concluded last weekend at Northern Kentucky University and Lipscomb. FGCU swept NKU Friday night 3-0, but were swept the next day by Lipscomb.
The Eagles finish the season 13-18 overall and 9-9 in conference play. The quarterfinals for the 2013 Atlantic Sun championship start Thursday, when the women face Stetson at 5 p.m. in Kennesaw, Ga. The season series between FGCU and Stetson was split. The game will be on ESPN3.
