FGCU women’s tennis loses to FIU in season opener

This past weekend, the FGCU women’s tennis team went head to head with the FIU Panthers. It lost lost 0-4 in the first dual match of the season.
The event was supposed to begin at 1 p.m. but was delayed until 4 p.m. due to excessive wind. The match started off fast and to a good start for FGCU, which held the lead 1-0, but ended with a loss for the women.
“We were challenged today and have a lot of room for growth,” said women’s tennis head coach Courtney Vernon. Later on in the singles portion of the match, the team was unable to get past the setbacks created during doubles. The singles play fell back in all six of the courts being played during Saturday’s matches.
“We’ll take a lot from this loss and start working to improve,” Vernon said. “Nothing will be wasted, as long as we keep our thoughts focused on growing every time we compete.”
The FGCU women’s tennis team will compete again this Friday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. in Tampa against USF. They will then go up against BethuneCookman at 2 p.m. Jan. 30 in Daytona Beach.
