This weekend was bittersweet for the FGCU men’s tennis team, starting off the weekend with a loss against UCF.
Up first was UCF. The Eagles struggled in the doubles matches. Oliver Landert and Eduardo Alfonzo lost in the first match up; Andres Alfonzo and Javier Fernandez evened up the doubles points, but UCF went on to claim the doubles points by taking down Lucas Vaz and Ezequiel Cerrini.
“UCF played a great overall match today in singles and doubles,” head coach CJ Weber said.
Early in singles play, the Eagles had the lead after Fernandez’s 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Ricky Ventura won at No. 2 singles, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Andres Alfonzo lost 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. UCF was able to even out the matches 2-2 and then win overall.
The Eagles will be staying in Fort Myers to face Florida A&M at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27.
