The Office of the General Counsel, which is responsible for representing the university in legal situations, has updated six university policies.
Six regulations were updated and have to be approved by the Board of Trustees before the changes will become permanent. Changes to policies Separation from Employment and First Year Tuition Rebate Program were posted on www.fgcu.edu/generalcounsel/promulgation.asp on Friday, March 18 while policies Student Grievance, Smoking and Consumption of Food in University Buildings and Export Controls and Employee Compensation and Classification were posted on Thursday, March 17.
Policy FGCU-PR5.023, Separation from Employment, “is amended to provide language regarding Executive Service employees who separate from employee or position, as well as to address conflicts between contracts and this Regulation,” according to the policy summary.
Several changes were made to this policy. The title was changed from “Separations from Employment” to “Separations”; a sentence was added to the end of the general statement, and a note was added onto information about separation with advanced notice.
Policy FGCU-PR4.004, Student Grievance, “is being amended to expand the role of the University Ombuds to address student disputes beyond those encompassing access to course and credit,” according to the general summary, and deals with the university’s mechanism for student dispute resolutions.
The general statement was changed altogether, focusing more on the Office of the University Ombuds, a department that deals with students who have conflicts regarding the university. “Informal Resolution of Student Grievances” was changed to “Disputes.”
Policy FGCU-PR9.007, Smoking and Consumption of Food in University Buildings, “is being amended to reflect a change and focus of the regulation to address the Smoke-Free and Tobacco Free Campus,” according to the regulation summary.
The main change made to the policy was an addition to the general statement. “In addition, the university has declared that it shall be smoke free and tobacco free” was added at the end of the statement.
Policy FGCU-PR5.001, Employee Compensation and Classification Plans, “is being amended to add clarifying language to the definitions of the classifications, as well as additional information about the classifications themselves.”
There were no major changes to the policy, only a few word choice changes were made. Information about what a probationary is was added to the definitions section of the policy as well as a new section regarding Executive Service Classification: “All persons classified as executive service serve at the pleasure of the President, and may be reassigned, reclassified, or separated as the President deems appropriate, consistent with the provisions of FGCU-PR5.023, Separation from Employment.”
