The FGCU women’s golf team finished the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational with a total score of 941 (+77), putting them in 9th place for the tournament.
The Eagles moved up one spot from where they had previously been on Sunday. They finished 9th out of eleven teams at Kansas State’s Colbert Hills Golf Course.
Our first tournament wasn’t exactly what we had imagined, but we had some flashes of really good play,” FGCU head coach Sarah Trew said. “We have some things to work on before the next event, but I am confident we can get them sorted out. Overall, this was a great experience and opportunity to get outside our comfort zone and grow as a team. In order to improve, we need to play more difficult courses so that we may be fully prepared for the postseason.”
Sophomore Laura Edmonds shot a 73 (+1) in the final round while posting a 234 (+18) throughout the whole tournament with two bridies. Senior Alisa Clark led the team in birdies with three on the final day of the tournament.
Isabella Portokalis led FGCU, shooting a 73 (+1) on her final day and a total 233 (+17) that put her in 39th overall.
FGCU’s next tournament will be Sept. 30 – Oct.2 when they head to Columbia, Mo. to compete in the Johnie Imes Invitational.
