The FGCU women’s basketball team (14-2,1-0) rang in the new year with an 82-56 victory over Lipscomb to open ASUN competition play at home early Saturday. The win was the 100th for the program in Alico Arena in regular-season conference play.
In addition to that, the team’s win extended the nation’s fifth-longest conference winning streak to 29 straight.
Along with the historic victory, the team celebrated Tytionia Adderly’s performance as she became the first player in program history to reach 1,000 career rebounds.
“To get 1,000 rebounds in a career is remarkable,” FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. “It’s a lot rarer than 1,000-point scorers. She just defends and rebounds. I was really happy today that she was looking for points and chances to shoot a three or attack the basket because that’s a dimension she has.”
Adderly also displayed her scoring prowess, registering a season-high 21 points while still posting 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals against the Bisons.
Behind Adderly, the Eagles had a combined 44 points from Nasrin Ulel (18), Keri Jewett-Giles (16) and Kerstie Phills (10).
Overall, the Eagles outscored Lipscomb 30-4 in points coming off turnovers and held the advantage in the paint (40-22), points off rebounds (13-2), fast-breaks (8-2) and from the bench (8-2).
The FGCU women’s basketball team looks to continue their win streak against conference opponents when they face-off against Liberty (8-6,1-0) in a rematch of last year’s ASUN title game this Monday in Alico Arena at 7 p.m.
