Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the 2014 UEFA Champions League Final. This gave Real Madrid its 10th European club title overall. This was its first title in this competition since 2002.
Real Madrid was led by Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos, Christian Ronaldo and Ángel Di María. They all played a part in the win in Lisbon, Portugal.
Saturday’s 2014 UEFA Champions League Final also marked the first final involving two teams from the same city. Atletico Madrid was going for its first European title in its club’s history.
Real Madrid was going for its record 10th European title. Forward Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid was forced to leave the game after only nine minutes.
Costa had also been battling injuries and was a question mark to play in the final. The Spanish striker limped off with a hamstring injury during last weekend’s Spanish Primera Division decider at Barcelona. Despite this, Diego Godín gave Atletico Madrid a 1-0 lead after 36 minutes. He headed the ball past Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas. His attempt to claw the ball away before it crossed the line failed.
Midfielder Sami Khedira received a yellow card for a bad challenge late in the first half. After 45 minutes of play Atletico Madrid led Real Madrid by a score of 1-0.
After halftime, Real Madrid became more successful in their attacking. Marcelo and Isco came in for Sami Khedira and Fábio Coentrão respectively. Soon afterwards, Atletico brought on José Sosa for Raúl García.
Atletico Madrid kept trying to contain Real Madrid. Unfortunately, they began to pick up yellow cards. Gabi, David Villa, Koke, Juanfran and Miranda were shown yellow cards after halftime. Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Marcelo were also shown yellow cards for Real Madrid.
